Wilkes Chapter NewsSPJ-Wilkes tours Newseum, Cox Communications
Members of the Society of Professional Journalists-Wilkes Chapter visited the Newseum in Washington, D.C., on May 2, 2013. Making the trip with adviser Loran Lewis were Shawn Carey, chapter President Kirstin Cook, Alyssa Stencavage, chapter Vice President Bill Thomas and Christine Lee. After spending most of the day touring the Newseum, the group visited Wilkes the Cox Communications D.C. headquarters where alumnus Kyla Campbell offered a tour of the facility and offered advice on careers in journalism.
Students win awards in SPJ Region 1 contestThree Wilkes University students and Beacon reporters were recognized with reporting awards during the SPJ Region 1 Conference April 12-13 at Rutgers University. Former Beacon News Editor Phat Nguyen won first place for in-depth reporting, Editor-in-Chief Kirstin Cook won second place for news reporting (left in photo) and Arts & Entertainment Editor Bill Thomas (center) won third place for feature writing. Current News Editor Christine Lee (right) also attended the conference.
SPJ wins Wilkes video contestMarch 9, 2012
The Wilkes SPJ entry was voted the winner of Wilkes University's student video contest. The video, "The Wilkes Family," looked at the family and mentoring community at Wilkes. The video was shot and edited by Kirstin Cook, with help from Devoni Novak, Phat Nguyen and Kurt Topfer. The $500 first place prize will go directly into the Wilkes SPJ fund. Thanks to the support of the Keystone SPJ Pro Chapter, three students and their adviser were able to represent Wilkes SPJ at the Region 1 Conference on March 23 and 24 at Stony Brook University.
